Innocence Sleeping

INNOCENCE SLEEPING

Words: Brian Patten, Music: Caroline Lavelle

Sleeping beside you I dreamt
I woke beside you;
waking beside you
I thought I was dreaming.

The motion of landscapes, of oceans
is inside him.
He is
so innocent sleeping,
no protection is needed.

At such times
the heart opens,
contains all there is,
there being no more than him.

Have you ever slept beside the ocean?
It is just like this,
I can sleep well beside him.

At such times,
the heart opens,
contains all there is,
there being no more than him.

Waking beside him I am dreaming.
Dreaming of such wakings
I am to all senses woken.

Taken from the poem ‘The innocence of any flesh sleeping’ by Brian Patten
